Again, it drained my Gauge and enough stamina to make following up a (potentially live-saving) gamble, and left me wide open for enemy combos when I whiffed.
Enemies soared into the air, typically dead before they hit the ground, when struck with the blade’s L2 uppercut ability. Likewise, putting away a shield and using two hands to wield a humongous broadsword opens up new offensive opportunities. When I missed, I lost endurance, Gauge, and a scary amount of HP for my error.
When that whirling combo connected, I lost a huge amount of my Gauge and some stamina, but the burst damage made it worthwhile. The tempo of combat quickened, and I was laying into enemies with light/heavy combos before pirouetting with a stylish series of spinning strikes. I traded my shield for a second sword, and suddenly Dark Souls 3 felt like Bloodborne - I was all aggression. Dark Souls 3 adds another attack button to its light/heavy strikes each press of the DualShock’s L2 button requires mana as well as stamina to execute these new moves. Gauge affects more than these specific, equipped spells, too. Most notably, you’ll need to forego a left-hand object to take advantage of your Gauge skills holding a broken bell or magic staff instead of a torch or shield leaves you even more exposed. It does, somewhat, but there is a heavy risk associated with every potential reward. I worried magic would make Dark Souls 3 easier, as was the case with certain Sorcery builds in the original Dark Souls. Magic is another tool in your toolbox, and like managing endurance and vitality, it’s best observed with care and sacrificed only when you can gain a great deal in return. I dreaded my vulnerability while awaiting the cathartic sensation of slamming lightning into a foe. In addition to mana, it leaves the user completely exposed to attacks. The wide slice of the ghostly blade can eviscerate enemies in groups, but the power comes at a cost. These abilities are devastating when used well.
